For many people including children in a ceremony is an essential part of the special day, however, there are definitely considerations which need to be made. Let's look at some of the best ways to involve children of all ages in ceremonies.
Including Younger Children
Of course, the obvious concern when including young children in ceremonies is what level of involvement they can take. But there is no need to worry!
My experience as an ex-teacher both in primary and secondary school is that most children love to get involved and help. Generally, younger children may need more direction when compared to teenagers or older children.
Younger children can get involved with numerous activities during the service. From filling a sand jar (for sand ceremonies) to helping with picking ribbons for hand-binding ceremonies. This last one can be particularly special if you’re a newer blended family.
So, I you’re wanting to include a younger child in your wedding, renewal or naming ceremony there are certainly plenty of options to do so.
Including Teenagers
Generally, teenagers may prefer to be asked to what level they will want to contribute. For this reason, it would be a good idea to include them in the second consultation stage.
Teenagers (believe it or not!) can be trusted with a wide range of tasks during any ceremony. Including lighting candles, and assisting me with the binding of the hands during a hand-fasting ceremony.
Perhaps more confident teenagers may feel comfortable with conducting a small reading or playing a piece of music they like. Ultimately with teenagers, the key is to be flexible and maintain an open line of communication. Together, it’s important to decide the level of responsibility and engagement they have in the ceremony.
Including Older Children & Special Need Children
You may want to include older or adult children in your ceremony. Of course, this is most likely when blended families are coming together. In this case, it’s probably best for them to read a poem/song lyrics, or perhaps conduct a reading they have written. If necessary I can help assist with the writing of any reading they wish to conduct.
Throughout my career, I have also worked with a lot of special needs children. Of course, depending on the needs of the child, additional considerations may be needed. However, I will do my utmost to work alongside your family to help make them feel relaxed and contribute however they wish to.
The main thing is to remember that together we can work to create a service which is happy and relaxed. Creating a warm, relaxed atmosphere which will ensure including children of any age is a wonderful addition to the day.
